According to an announcement on his official Instagram page, he died of cardiac angiosarcoma, a rare form of the disease. He was the creative director of Louis Vuitton and Off-White.
The creative director of Louis Vuitton men’s wear, as well as the founder of his brand, Off-White, Mr Abloh, was a fashion theorist whose expansive and sometimes controversial approach to design was comparable to Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons.
By bridging the gap between hypebeast culture and the luxury world, Virgil Abloh reinvented not just what consumers wanted to wear, but what brands wanted in a designer – and the very definition of “fashion.”.
He was a master of using irony, reference, and the self-aware wink (plus the digital world) to re-contextualize the familiar and give it a far more salient cultural role.
His design work for the covers of Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Lil Uzi Vert, Octavian, pop Smoke, Westside Gunn and others made him a highly visible figure in the rap world.
Abloh has worked closely with West before becoming a designer. In an interview, West said of Abloh: “I have all these ideas and Virgil is able to make them happen because he is a true architect.”
Following news that Virgil Abloh died of cancer, celebrities are sharing tributes on Twitter.
