Notably, Omar Mandela also leads Sports Club Villa (SC Villa), a top-tier football club within the East African Community.

Career and Professional Accomplishments:

Following his graduation, Hajji Omar gained valuable experience working in the banking sector. In 1983, he established the Mandela Group, initially beginning as a hardware store. Over time, the company expanded its operations to include tire trading, car oils, and fuel stations.

Recognizing the need to cater to customers at the fuel stations, he ventured into the restaurant business. He later initiated a milling company to supply raw materials for his restaurant chains. What began as a modest retail store has since evolved into a substantial multinational corporation. The Mandela Group operates not only in Kampala, Uganda, but also extends its reach to Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and other African nations, employing over 5,000 individuals.

The Mandela Group is a significant contributor to Uganda’s economy, playing a pivotal role in the private sector as one of the largest employers and a substantial taxpayer.

Omar Mandela’s entrepreneurial ventures extend beyond the hospitality industry through the Mandela Group. He owns Mandela Millers, a company that manufactures wheat and maize products, including flour. Additionally, he is the proprietor of City Tyres, Uganda’s largest tire manufacturing company, and City Oil, a prominent fuel and lubricants company with eight modern filling stations in Kampala, Uganda.

Other businesses under his ownership include Mandela Auto Spares, a leading supplier of authentic spare parts for various automobile models, as well as City World, a renowned distributor of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sourced from globally recognized brands in Europe, Asia, and America.

In November 2021, Hajji Omar was elected as the President of Sports Club Villa (SC Villa), a position he assumed following his previous role as treasurer, which he held for three consecutive terms since 1997.

Achievements and Philanthropy:

Omar Mandela’s business ventures have made a significant impact on Uganda’s economy. The Mandela Group oversees various successful businesses, including City Tires, City Oil, City Retread, Café Javas (CJ’s), Mandela Millers, Mandela AutoSpares, and Food Hub.

In addition to his business success, Hajji Omar Mandela actively supports numerous charitable initiatives.

Controversies:

Omar Mandela faced challenges when expanding his restaurant business to Kenya. Legal hurdles arose as Kenya’s Java House raised trademark infringement concerns over the name “Café Javas.” Consequently, the restaurant had to rebrand as CJ’s Restaurant when entering the Kenyan market in April 2018.

In December 2021, Omar Mandela encountered opposition from residents of Kijjabwemi Commercial District concerning 3.5 acres of land leased to his City Oil Company. Residents contested his renovation plans, questioning the legitimacy of his ownership of the contested land. The incident drew attention from local authorities, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution.

Overall, Hajji Omar Mandela stands as a prominent figure in Uganda, not only for his entrepreneurial achievements but also for his contributions to various sectors and philanthropic endeavors.
