Known professionally as Johnny Drille, Nigerian singer and songwriter John Ighodaro has released his highly anticipated debut album called ‘Before We Fall Asleep’. The album is comprised of 14 tracks, each of which showcases his unique style of soulful and often thought-provoking lyrics and melodies. It has been praised for its ability to capture the emotions of listeners in a very unique and powerful way.
In his body of work, John Ighodaro, aka Drille, synthesizes the diverse sounds of these six musicians to address issues related to romantic relationships, cultural identity, and political issues. By layering R&B, Jazz, Afro-Pop, Soul, and Highlife, Drille creates a unique musical experience that speaks to a wide audience.
Among the tracks on Johnny Drille’s Before We Fall Asleep album is My Kind of Brown, Loving is Harder, Ludo, Ova, Odo, Driving in the Rain, Before I Let Go, In the light, Clocks, Lies, Lost in the Rhythm, Sweet as a mother’s Love, Sister, and Lies(To Whom It May Concern), plus Sell my Soul.
A visual teaser for the project, which featured the singer being beaten by two men, was posted last month on Instagram, showing the artist’s sober reflection amid scars on his body.
John Drille entered the music scene in 2013 when he competed on Project Fame West Africa’s sixth season. He made it to the top 6 contestants and was noticed for his unique vocal style and musical taste. After the show, he went on to release several singles, with his music gaining more and more attention.
He came through with a cover of ‘Awww’ by Dija, a Nigerian artist who later became his label mate. Don Jazzy, CEO of Mavin Records, was drawn to the artist’s original sound, convincing him to sign with the label in 2017.
Since then, he has released a number of singles, which have turned out to be a major success with huge recognition. In 2019, he won ‘Best Alternative Song’ at the 2019 edition of The Headies.
