The first-ever Janzi Awards ceremony took place between Saturday, December 11, 2021, and Sunday, December 12, 2021, at Kololo Airstrip, with a laid-back atmosphere based partly on the decor and partly on the attire of the guests.
The event was hosted by comedian Mark Agaba, TV star Karitas Karisimbi, and celebrity Isaac Rucci and officiated by the Minister for Labour, Gender, and Social Development, Peace Mutuuzo.
With performances by the comedy duo Mad Rat & Chico, Jowi Landa, Mudra, and Mr Eezzy, the Janzi award was a must-see event.
In the battle for the ‘Outstanding Song of the Year’ award, Pia was up against Mudra (Muyaayu), Mr Eezzy (Tumbiiza Sound), and Pallaso (Malamu).
Pia Pounds also won the ‘Outstanding video’ trophy, beating fellow Ugandan heavyweights Pallaso (Naloonda Ne Mala) and Bebe Cool (Wire Wire).
Levixone, also known as Sam Lucas Lubyogo, was another big winner at the Janzi awards. He won two awards: Outstanding Faith-Based Musician and Humanitarian Award.
In the ‘Outstanding Faith Based Musician’ category, Levixone beat out competition from Zoe Melodies (Greater Love) and Joseph Generation (Embraced).
The Chikibombe hitmaker beat out fellow nominees Halima Namakula (Fistula) and Bebe Cool (Heart Foundation) in the Humanitarian Award category.
Without wins from Azawi and Eddy Kenzo, it would have been a forgettable inaugural Janzi Awards.
Azawi won the ‘Outstanding Album of the Year’ category, edging out Ykee Benda (Kirabo) and Eddy Kenzo (Made in Africa). She was also crowned ‘Female Artrist of the year’.
Then, in the ‘Viewers’ Choice Award’ category, Eddy Kenzo ended up winning, beating out Pallaso (Malamu) and Felista di Superstar (Bwotyo).
Eddy Kenzo has long been regarded as one of the most popular artists in the music industry, after winning the Viewers’ Choice Best International Artist award at the 2015 BET Awards, and winning the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award in 2018.
In its ‘Outstanding Promoter in Uganda’ category, Talent Africa Group was recognized by the Janzi Awards. Group CEO Aly Allibhai received the award and, via social media, expressed his excitement and appreciation to all supporters who voted & made the win possible, most especially Janzi Awards Academy.
The ‘Outstanding Performer’ category went to Sheebah Karungi, while the ‘Male Artist of the Year’ category went to Pallaso. He defeated Eddy Kenzo and Fik Fameica to win the award.
Then Bobi Wine won the award for ‘Outstanding Entrepreneurial Artist’, edging out Sheebah Karungi (Holic Pads) and B2C (Kiyamba Ffena Wipes).
