It was Beyoncé’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ which won the Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album Award last year; Wizkid’s role in the track also earned him the Outstanding Duo or Group Award in 2020.
The song is taken from Wizkid’s Grammy-nominated fourth album Made in Lagos, the song and album are both up for awards at the 2022 GRAMMYS: ‘Essence’ for Best Global Music Performance and Made in Lagos for Best Global Music Album.
Following the song’s global success, which charted on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200, Wizkid released a remix of ‘Essence’ that featured Justin Bieber’s verse.
After surpassing Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora’s eponymous album with 66 weeks on the chart, Made in Lagos is now the longest-running album by an African act on Billboard World Albums Chart.
