The song of summer, ‘Essence’
“Essence” by Wizkid feat. Tems was described by many as Nigeria’s hottest song in 2021, and now it has bumped Fireboy DML’s “Peru”, Tiwa Savage’s “Somebody’s Son” with Brandy, Omah Lay’s “Understand” and KiDi’s “Touch It”, bringing Wizkid’s total to three NAACP Image Awards.
In 2021, Beyoncé’s Brown Skin Girl, featuring Wizkid, won the Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album Award. In 2020, the ‘Essence’ star was also recognized for his contribution to the record with the Outstanding Duo or Group Award.
‘Essence’ from Wizkid’s Grammy-nominated fourth album Made in Lagos is produced by P2J and Legendury Beatz.
Both the song and the album are nominated for the 2022 GRAMMY Awards: ‘Essence’ for Best Global Music Performance and Made in Lagos for Best Global Music Album.
Wizkid released a remix of “Essence” in August 2021, featuring a new verse by Justin Bieber following the global success of the song, which charted on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200.
After surpassing Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora’s eponymous album, which held the 27-year record with 66 weeks on the chart, Made in Lagos became the longest-running album by an African act on the Billboard World Albums Chart last week.
