At the premiere of the 63rd Grammy Awards, Burna Boy won Best Global Music Album with his Twice as Tall. This marks his first career Grammy success.
Burna Boy won his first Grammy on March 14 at the 63rd edition of the awards. His album Twice As Tall reigned above Tinariwen’s Amadjar, Antibalas’ FU Chronicles, Bebel Gilberto’s Agora and Anoushka Sankar’s Love Letters.
Burna Boy, one of the eight performers at the 2021 Grammy awards was not only the Nigerian winner of the night-or in the history of the project. Wizkid’s’ Brown Skin Girl ‘, with the help of Beyonce, won the Best Music Video Award at this year’s awards.
In 2017, Cynthia Erivo, a singer, songwriter and actress of Nigerian descent, won the Best Musical Theater Album award for her contribution to The Color Purple album.
Other Grammy-winning African performances include South Africa’s Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Soweto Gospel Choir, as well as Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure and Senegal superstar Youssou N’dour.
Produced by Sean Combs, Bosede Ogulu and Burna Boy, the Twice As Tall leading musicians are Youssef N’Dor (Mali), Sauti Sol from Kenya, America’s Naughty By Nature, Stormzy and Coldplay’s Chris Martin from the UK. Contributions include Timbaland, Anderson Bach and Mike Dean, all from the US.
Commenting on the Nigerian musician, Puff Diddy said, “Like every artist, he wants his music to be heard by the world.”You know, he’s not trying to be hot. He’s not like, ‘I want to be a big pop star’-he’s already a star. He wants his music, his message, his people to be heard. “
In November, the Recording Academy announced plans to transform the title of Best World Music Album into the Best Global Music Album, a step towards a “more relevant, modern and all-encompassing era.”
The statement adds: “This shift symbolizes that the former word expressed in adaptation to contemporary audience patterns and cultural transformation between its diverse cultures is distanced from colonial, folk, and ‘non-American’ connotations.”
Meanwhile, Beyonce is also proud to be the most Grammy-winning woman after winning her 28th accolade, the Best R & B Performance Award. This year’s “Record of the Year” went to Billie Eilish for “Everything I Wanted”, while R & B singer HER won the Best Song of the Year award for “I Can’t Breathe.”
The 2021 Grammys took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where singer Jhene Aiko served as a host at the pre-broadcast premiere, where most of the night’s awards were actually presented.
While the broadcast will be hosted by South African comedian Trevor Noah tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET on the CBS TV network.
