The family and close associates of Cedric Ndilima Babu have begun a week-long programme of remembrance to honour the life of the prominent Ugandan media personality, sports administrator and political figure, who died on Saturday 31 May in Nairobi, Kenya. He was 49.

Babu passed away from complications related to severe heart failure, according to a family statement. His death has sent ripples across Uganda’s media and sporting communities, where he was widely admired for his charisma, drive and dedication to public service.

A series of memorial events is now underway, with the family releasing a tentative programme that spans prayer gatherings, vigils, public tributes, and final funeral rites.

A Life Remembered

Cedric Babu rose to national prominence as a television host and later as a leader in Uganda’s sporting scene, most notably in tennis administration. He also contested in parliamentary elections and was seen by many as a future leader. His influence, especially among young Ugandans, has been widely noted in the tributes that have poured in since his death.

Programme of Events

The farewell began on Sunday, 1 June, with prayers and an evening of remembrance at Babu’s residence in Kololo, located at Plot 1, Fumu Close. Similar gatherings are expected to continue on Monday and Tuesday at the same venue, with daily prayers at 5:00 PM and a fellowship at 6:00 PM.

On Wednesday 4 June, the focus will shift to the home of Captain Francis Babu, Cedric’s father, in Naguru. A Catholic Mass will be held at 6:00 PM, followed by a vigil at 8:00 PM.

Thursday’s programme will mirror the previous day, with another evening Mass and vigil planned at the Naguru home.

A Requiem Mass is planned for Friday 6 June at Rubaga Cathedral in Kampala, although the specific time is yet to be confirmed. The body will then be taken to Kamengo in Mpigi District — the family’s ancestral home — where a vigil will be held at 6:00 PM.

The final burial ceremony will take place in Kamengo on Saturday 7 June. Details of the service will be announced in due course.

National Reflections

Leaders from government, the media, and sports sectors have paid tribute to Cedric Babu, praising his passion, integrity and commitment to national development. Many have described him as a bridge between generations — a man who believed in Uganda’s potential and worked tirelessly to uplift others.

He is survived by his wife and three sons.

As the nation prepares to bid farewell, mourners are encouraged to join the scheduled events and share in celebrating a life that left an indelible mark on Uganda’s cultural and civic landscape.

May his soul rest in peace.
