The 2021 Soul Train Music Awards will take place at the Apollo Theater in New York on 20 November, and Wizkid and Tems are among the nominees from Africa.

This year, the Soul Train Music Awards celebrate their golden anniversary by honouring outstanding achievements in African-American culture, including soul music, contemporary R&B, gospel music, jazz, and hip hop.
With the global hit song ‘Essence,’ Wizkid and Tems have been shortlisted for multiple categories, including Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, and The Ashford And Simpson Songwriter’s Award.
For his album ‘Made In Lagos’, Wizkid has been nominated for Album of the Year, while Tems is competing for Best New Artist.
Globally, H.E.R. leads the nominated artists for the 2021 Soul Train Music Awards with eight nominations, followed by Jazmine Sullivan and Chris Brown with six nominations each.
Event organizers BET has announced that Gerald Maxwell Rivera will receive the Legend award at the awards ceremony, and R&B singer Ashanti will take home the Lady of Soul award.
Maxwell said: “It’s an honour to be presented with the Legend award by a community that’s been growing with me throughout my career. I’m so grateful to be sharing this moment with everyone and returning to the Apollo for an evening of excellence.,”
Ashanti said: “I’m honoured to be recognized as this year’s ‘Lady of Soul’ honoree. This is a full-circle moment for me because I received the Aretha Franklin Entertainer of the Year Award at the Lady of Soul Awards in 2002. As we commemorate 50 years of Soul Train, I’m proud to be a part of this legacy and to return to the Apollo to celebrate.”
