In a field filled with talent, there were some tough choices this year. Here are the BET Awards 2020 nominees and winners of the major categories.
The BET Awards 2020 went virtual this year, providing a polished and powerful experience despite the zooming projection. The BET Awards 2020 honoured black excellence in the entertainment world, with awards in the categories of humanitarian work, athletic achievement and artistic achievement.

The award show also demonstrated that the revolution would be televised at this time.
Beyonce won the humanitarian award
One of the highlights of the night was Beyonce winning the award for honouring her humanitarian work. Former First Lady Michelle Obama, who presented the award, said: “To my woman, I would like to say that you are encouraging me, you are an inspiration to all of us.”
Beyonce has invested time, money and passion into the community, especially through her Baguette initiative. The organization offers scholarship programs and helps fund numerous social justice foundations.
BeyGood is also involved in a wide range of COVID-19 tests, especially in low-black communities.
In her acceptance speech, Beyonce sent a strong message to black Americans: “Your voices are heard and you prove to our forefathers that their struggles are in vain. Now we have one more thing to walk in our true power, it must be voted on. I encourage you to continue taking action. Proceed to replace and eliminate racism and inequality. “
The musician and enthusiast concluded his speech with a call to action. “We have to vote as our life depends on it,” she urged her fans. “Because it does.”
A ceremony with a message
This year’s BET Awards are not limited to entertainment and display. This is political. In terms of the national (and international) movement to end police brutality and demand racial justice, this year’s ceremony took on a more serious tone.
The show opened, not with a brilliant performance or comedy monologue, but with a powerful message of hatred and racism. 12-year-old Keedrom Bryant sang his viral piece “I Just Wanna Live”. The end of the song was followed immediately by images of protests by Black Lives Matter and the public enemy, Nas, Rapsody, YG and Black Thought in “Fight the Power.”
Connie Orlando, who produced the show, had previously warned that this year’s festival would break the mold. “This is going to be our biggest event,” he said, “not because of the anniversaries, but because of what’s happening.”
The show struck a wonderful balance between celebrating achievement and acknowledging the struggles of the black community.
“We’re always finding a way to continue to celebrate our culture,” executive producer Jeannae Rouzan-Clay said of this year’s show. “Amid fun and celebratory events, we remind you of what’s going on within our community. We need to be vigilant and make sure people are taken seriously.”
What do the BET awards mean?
The BET Awards is a US awards program established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television Network to celebrate the musical, acting, sporting and other fields of entertainment amongst African Americans and other American minorities.
