Vaginal lubrication is a natural response that can occur during sexual arousal. However, the amount of fluid produced varies between individuals and can change with hormones, stress, medication and other health factors.

Understanding how lubrication works can help women distinguish normal variations from persistent dryness that may require medical attention.

What causes vaginal lubrication?

Natural vaginal lubrication occurs when fluid passes through vaginal tissues in response to increased blood flow and other physiological changes associated with arousal. Secretions from glands near the vaginal opening also contribute to moisture.

The amount of lubrication varies from person to person and may differ at different times. Some women experience substantial lubrication during arousal, while others produce less despite feeling sexually interested.

Lubrication alone is not a reliable measure of sexual desire, satisfaction or readiness for sexual activity.

Factors that can affect lubrication

Several factors can influence vaginal moisture.

Hormonal changes: Lower oestrogen levels, including those associated with menopause, can make vaginal tissues thinner, less elastic and drier. Hormonal changes at other stages of life may also affect moisture.

Stress and anxiety: Emotional distress can affect arousal and the body’s physical responses. Feeling comfortable and unpressured may help, although individual experiences differ.

Medications: Some medicines, including certain antihistamines and antidepressants, can contribute to dryness. Anyone who suspects a medication is responsible should consult a healthcare professional before changing or stopping it.

Insufficient arousal: Some people experience reduced lubrication when they have not become sufficiently aroused. However, dryness can occur even when arousal is present.

Medical conditions: Certain infections, skin conditions and other health problems can cause irritation or dryness. Persistent symptoms should not automatically be attributed to a lack of arousal.

When lubricants may help

Water-based or silicone-based personal lubricants can reduce friction and discomfort during sexual activity. Vaginal moisturisers are another option for people experiencing ongoing dryness.

Products should be intended for genital use. Perfumed lotions, creams and other products not designed for vaginal use may cause irritation. Baby oil and other oil-based products can also damage latex condoms.

Warm showers may help a person feel comfortable, but hot water does not reliably increase vaginal lubrication. Washing inside the vagina is unnecessary and can disrupt its normal environment.

When to seek medical advice

Occasional dryness does not necessarily indicate a medical problem. However, persistent dryness, pain, itching, unusual discharge, bleeding or a burning sensation warrants assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. A clinician may recommend a suitable lubricant or moisturiser, review medications or investigate possible infections and hormonal changes.

Vaginal lubrication varies naturally, and there is no single amount that is normal for everyone. Understanding the factors that affect moisture and seeking appropriate care when symptoms persist can help protect vaginal health.
