The upcoming album ‘Kampala Boy’ will be Flex D’Paper’s first album in the nearly ten years since he began releasing music, dating back to his very first track in 2010.
Flex D’Paper released a mixtape titled ‘Not For Sale’ in 2016 and featured top artists from Uganda and Germany. Artists such as A Pass, Navio, Levixone, Bigtril, Martha Smallz, among others contributed their art to the mixtape.
MBU spoke with Flex D’Paper, who shared the news that his long-awaited first solo studio album ‘Kampala Boy’ will be released on 10th December 2021.
Flex said the album is a showcase of Ugandan Hip Hop’s talent since most genres here are more popular than Hip Hop, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t talent within Ugandan Hip Hop.
“This project is my battle cry for Ugandan Hip Hop to be noticed internationally, because most genres are more popular in Uganda than Hip Hop, and yet there is a lot of talent here, as this album shows,” Flex said.
”I want Ugandan Hip Hop to get noticed outside Uganda. There is a lot of talent in Ugandan Hip Hop, and this album is my battle cry to get it out there,” Flex said.
‘Kampala Boy’ is named after where I was born and raised. Having lived within this city all my life, I know the ins and outs and have experienced joy as well as pain there, Flex added.
In comparison to Flex D’Paper’s 2017 mixtape ‘Not For Sale,’ the ‘Kampala Boy’ album offers a more diverse sound and more innovative topography.
This project shows Flex D’Paper’s easy-going personality and easy-going lifestyle, which is visible by the list of co-collaborators he has on it.
The sound of ‘Kampala Boy’ is a diverse mix of top acts including Fik Fameica, A Pass, Navio, Keko, Shena Skies, and Kemishan, among others.
A look at the list of producers on the album solidifies Flex D’Paper’s diverse approach: Aethan Music, Mio Made, Nessim, Sam Lamara, among others.
In addition to the typical Flex D’Paper Hip Hop sound, the album includes fresh soundtracks for the youth, love songs, Afrobeat, and low-key energy vibes as well.
The album was recorded at Icon Studios and mastered at Konkrete in Uganda and Europe.
On the topic of endorsements, the album has already received endorsements from global star Swae Lee on a skit in which he emphasizes Flex as that ‘Kampala Boy’.
Who is Flex D’Paper?
Born 19 January 1990, Alex Julius Kwesigabo, better known as Flex D’Paper, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter from Kampala, Uganda.
Flex D’Paper attended Greenhill Academy for his primary school and Seeta High School for his secondary school and St. Mary’s Kitende for his advanced schooling before enrolling at Makerere University for a degree in Information Technology.
During his high school years, Flex D’Paper was part of a group called ‘The Rapaholix’, which he started with his friend Dasper Cosine and joined by his friend A Pass to release a mixtape called ‘The Eviction Notice’.
“The Eviction Notice” mixtape included chart-toppers such as “Burning”, “Party Life” and “Follow Me” (with Allan Toniks).
Flex D’Paper told Hot 100.9 FM in Uganda that his name comes from being flexible because he can write different styles of music, as well as ghostwrite for other artists, while Paper comes from being motivated to get money and to change his environment.
As early as 2012, Flex D’Paper established his own clothing line, ‘The Rapholix Wear’, which has gained popularity among young people and public figures alike.
Flex D’Paper joined other artists, Keko, Daisy Ejang, Naava Grey, comedian Pablo among others in 2015 for the One Million Campaign Against Cancer, a campaign for children and young people suffering from cancer in Uganda.
In the same year, Flex D’Paper was also part of a group of young artists and public figures that represented the Ambition Mission, which included Juliana Kanyomozi, Eddy Kenzo, Mun G among others.
This non-government organization spearheaded anti-tobacco campaigns like “I Am Ambition Mission, Sili Taaba”.
Flex D’Paper was part of the artists in Uganda that joined Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli in March 2016, a charity based organization located in Hamburg that campaigns for freshwater, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
In 2017, Flex performed alongside musicians like Keko, The Mith and Maro at the World Water Day celebration in Moroto, Uganda.
On 2 December, he performed in the We Love Youganda festival organized by the Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli Kampala office alongside various artists including Maro, Navio, Muthoni from Rwanda, and Chef Boss from Germany.
