Birding in Uganda: Best Places to Spot Rare Birds & Shoebill

Uganda has become a magnet for birding enthusiasts, offering habitats that range from the Albertine Rift’s endemic species to the elusive Shoebill, with hotspots stretching from Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Uganda is an exceptional option when it comes to African bird safari destinations because of its best birding spots.

The country prides itself on a wide variety of bird species and aquariums, unlike any other place in Africa. The country’s richness truly reflects the ever-growing bird list of more than 1,010 species.

From the deeply forested tropical central region to the western highlands, Uganda is home to many bird species in Africa. Most national parks in Uganda have a variety of birds that are sure to attract bird lovers.

Most of the Ugandan bird safaris are made by tailors, and the paths to these destinations are guided tours by experienced and professional bird guides. In Uganda, it is best to breed birds in the morning and afternoon.

Explore Bwindi, Semuliki, Mabamba Swamp, and Queen Elizabeth National Park to see over 1,000 bird species.

Some of the best birding spots can be found in the Budongo Forest Area, located in the western part of Uganda. Here are a few recommendations to include in your itinerary.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is a very special place with a wide range of birds in every part. The best bird habitat in the park is the extensive wetland, which culminated in Mburo Lake.

The number of birds around the wetland includes a green-backed woodpecker, a ground hornbill, a white-winged warbler, a yellow-billed apexer and a spot-sidewalk.

Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park in Uganda is located at the northern foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains in a remote corner of southwestern Uganda. The Semuliki is known to be highly desirable, including the Congo Serpent Eagle, the Black-throated Goggle, the Gray-Throat Rail, and the Yellow-throated Knitter. Because birds are easy to spot.

Budongo forest

The Budongo Forest Area, located in the western part of the country, covers an area of ​​793 sq km and offers some of the best birding spots in Uganda. Most bird feeding trails in the forest start early in the morning.

This heavily forested area protects rare bird species in Uganda. Black-billed Barbet, Gray-Head Olive Pack and singing cisticola are some of the rare bird species found here. The Busingro area provides the best birding spot in the forest.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park is located in northwestern Uganda, which spreads locally from the shores of Lake Albert. It is Uganda’s largest national park and protects many species of rare bird species.

The park is named after the dramatic Murchison falls, which is a 7 m break from the River Nile to a 47 m range.

Attractive bird species include the shy shoebill, secretary bird, Sacred Ibis, Little Bitton, red-necked falcon, Blue-breasted bee and more.
