Detectives at Kira Road Police Station are looking into a suspected poisoning case at Mezo Noir, a popular nightclub in Kampala. A woman collapsed in the manager’s office early Thursday morning.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the victim, identified only as Martha, met her friend, Edward Mugabo, a cashier at the bar, around 2 a.m. They drank together until 3:30 a.m., then moved to the manager’s office, which has no CCTV cameras. That’s where she collapsed. Mugabo called his brother, Joseph Kalenzi, and they rushed her to Kampala Hospital, where she remains on life support.
“The doctors at the hospital have not yet pronounced the victim dead. Reports from the doctors indicate that she is still on life support system, her brain is dead but other organs are still functioning,” Onyango said.

Police have detained Mugabo and Kalenzi at Kira Road Police Station as investigations continue.
Hours after the incident, Mezo Noir’s management announced a temporary closure, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), they apologized for the inconvenience and promised to update customers on the reopening date.
