Frank Malingumu Gashumba, the outspoken Ugandan media personality and political commentator, has surprised fans and critics alike after photos emerged from what appeared to be his traditional kwanjula ceremony in Sembabule District.
Images circulating online on Thursday evening show the 50-year-old dressed in Rwandan traditional attire, flanked by friends and family, smiling warmly during what insiders confirmed was an introduction ceremony with his long-time partner, Patience Mutoni Malaika.
The ceremony, kept tightly under wraps until now, was held at Ms Mutoni’s family home on 15 May 2025 and attended by a select circle of friends, clergy, and public figures. Among the notable guests were Pastor Aloysius Bugingo, Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr Lawrence Muganga, designer Titus Brian Ahumuza and Sanyuka TV’s Makona.
Dr Muganga congratulated the couple in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Gashumba upon this beautiful union. I wish you endless love, joy, and God’s richest blessings as you begin this new chapter together.”
For a man long known for his scepticism toward marriage, the development marks a notable shift. Gashumba, a father of two daughters, including popular media figure Sheilah Gashumba, has in past interviews been openly dismissive of the idea of settling down.
Speaking to a local radio station in 2024, he bluntly stated:
“I cannot get married. What will a woman give me? When you marry, you spend the entire night awake. I don’t have that energy.”
He went on to describe a former relationship with what he called “an extremely attractive” partner, recounting with some humour how her high libido left him physically drained:
“At 3am, at 5am – I would go to work feeling exhausted, and at one point, I thought I was going to collapse.”
Yet the man once known for his solitary lifestyle now appears to have had a change of heart. In the images captured by Daville Photography, Gashumba seems content and at ease—standing beside his fiancée with a quiet humility that contrasts with his typically combative public persona.
Born on 3 December 1974 in Villa Maria, Masaka District, Gashumba is of Rwandan heritage. He attended St Francis Primary School and Aga Khan Secondary School in Masaka, before graduating from Nkumba University in 1996 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
Though better known for his political commentary and leadership of the Sisimuka Uganda advocacy platform, Gashumba’s personal life has rarely taken centre stage. Until now.
With his surprise introduction ceremony now public, many are left reflecting on the unexpected ways life can turn — even for those who once swore they’d never marry.
