Kampala’s restaurant scene spans traditional Ugandan food, Indian cuisine, Japanese dishes and European-style dining, giving residents and visitors a range of options across the city.

The capital’s food culture reflects its diverse population and hospitality sector. Restaurants serve both local staples and international dishes, while cafés and informal food outlets cater to customers looking for breakfast, lunch, coffee or a quick meal.

For visitors, dining offers an opportunity to explore Ugandan cuisine alongside food traditions from other parts of the world. Local dishes such as matooke, luwombo and katogo remain important to the country’s food culture, while the rolex, made by wrapping an egg omelette in chapati, is a familiar street-food option.

Restaurants serving international cuisine

Several Kampala restaurants focus on European and Mediterranean dishes.

Le Chateau Brasserie Belge, located on Ggaba Road, serves Belgian and European cuisine. Its menu and dining arrangements make it an option for customers seeking a more formal restaurant experience.

Mediterraneo Restaurant offers Italian and Mediterranean food, including pasta and pizza. Its garden setting provides an alternative to restaurants with predominantly indoor dining spaces.

Cantine Divino focuses on Italian cuisine, while Piato Restaurant offers a range of international dishes, including grilled meats, seafood and salads.

For visitors interested in Brazilian-style grilled meat, La Cabana Restaurant, at Speke Apartments on Wampewo Avenue, is known for its churrasco-style dining.

Asian food across the capital

Kampala also has restaurants serving Indian, Japanese, Thai and broader Asian cuisine.

Yujo Izakaya, on Kyadondo Road, serves Japanese food, including sushi and noodles. Its menu provides an option for diners seeking an alternative to the European and local dishes found elsewhere in the city.

Izumi Restaurant and Lounge, on Upper Kololo Terrace, combines several Asian food traditions, with offerings that include sushi, Thai dishes, teppanyaki and dim sum.

Tamarai Restaurant, in the Lower Kololo Terrace area, focuses on Thai and Pan-Asian cuisine. Saffron Restaurant and Nawab Asian Bistro offer further options for diners interested in Asian-inspired menus, including Indian dishes.

Khana Khazana is another established option for Indian food, with dishes such as curries, biryani and tandoori preparations.

Cafés, views and casual dining

For less formal meals, Kampala has cafés and restaurant chains serving breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, salads and coffee.

Cafe Javas offers an extensive casual dining menu, while Endiro Coffee serves Ugandan coffee alongside light meals and baked goods.

Caramel Cafe and Lounge combines food and drinks in a contemporary setting. Golden Hill Restaurant and Lounge, in Muyenga, is another option for customers looking for a restaurant with views across parts of the city.

The Lawns Restaurant, on Lower Kololo Terrace, combines barbecue and international cuisine with a garden setting. The restaurant also lists game meat among its offerings, providing an option for diners interested in dishes beyond conventional beef, chicken and fish.

Where to try traditional Ugandan food

Visitors interested in local cuisine can look beyond international restaurants to establishments serving traditional Ugandan meals.

2K Restaurant is among the options listed for diners seeking dishes such as matooke, luwombo, grilled fish and groundnut sauce.

Luwombo is a traditional dish associated with Buganda in which meat, fish or other ingredients are cooked in banana leaves. Matooke, made from green cooking bananas, is commonly served with sauces or stews. Katogo combines a staple food, often matooke, with ingredients such as beans or meat.

The rolex offers a different experience. It consists of an omelette, often prepared with vegetables, rolled inside a chapati. Sold by street-food vendors, it is a widely recognised part of Uganda’s everyday food culture.

Other foods worth exploring include muchomo, or grilled meat, and seasonal nsenene, a dish made from edible grasshoppers.

Uganda’s food traditions vary across regions and communities, so Kampala’s restaurants represent only part of the country’s wider culinary heritage.

Choosing where to eat

The right restaurant depends on the type of meal, preferred cuisine, location and budget. Visitors seeking a formal dinner can consider the city’s international restaurants, while cafés offer lighter meals and traditional eateries provide opportunities to sample local dishes.

Menus, prices and opening hours can change. Diners should check directly with restaurants before visiting, particularly when planning a meal around a specific dish or dietary requirement.
