Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, or Bobi Wine, a member of parliament Kyadondo East, is next week on the list of presidential candidates who have so far been allowed to run for the presidency.

KEY POINTS

  • On Monday, the Electoral Commission approved Patrick Amuriat and Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu.
  • Others include former journalist and pastor Joseph Kabuleta and John Katumba.
  • The first to be approved by the Electoral Commission is President Museveni.
  • The presidential nominations will take place on 2 and 3 November at Kyambogo University.

Following the verification process of the signatures, he was cleared by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday. Of the 87 candidates who took the nominations, 22 have already handed over voter approval signatures for verification.

According to Electoral Commission spokesman Paul Bukenya, this is happening and candidates are expected to get the green light from them. Bukenya confirmed on Tuesday that eight candidates had filed nominations under the Presidential Election Act.

Under the law, presidential candidates must collect the signatures of at least 100 voters per district from two-thirds of the country’s 146 districts and cities as a precondition for their candidacy.

On Monday, the Electoral Commission approved four candidates,  Patrick Amuriat of FDC and Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu of ANT Party. Both FDC and ANT presented their signatures on Tuesday last week.

Others include former journalist and pastor Joseph Kabuleta and John Katumba.

Bukenya explained on Tuesday that some signatures were still in check, some did not have signatures from the district or the required 100 signatures from each district had not been raised.

However, he clarified that the election system has not yet rejected any candidate as the deadline for nominations is approaching on November 3.

“Whoever submits their submission is taken through a process. No one can be rejected until he or she fails to comply. When you submit and your income does not meet the requirement, we give you more time, but when you completely fail, you can be nominated. No. We are working with activists who have gaps and have asked them to go back to the district and go upstairs,” EC spokesman Bukenya said.

Museveni and Other candidates

Other candidates allowed last week include two independents, the NRM’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, former defence minister Lieutenant General Henry Tumukunde, Fred Mwesigye and Nancy Linda Kalembe.

The first to be approved by the Electoral Commission is President Museveni, who is only waiting for the nomination on November 2nd. Of the 22 candidates who have so far submitted signatures, six are sponsored by political parties.

The presidential nominations will take place on 2 and 3 November at the sports ground of Kyambogo University. The Electoral Commission set voting dates for parliamentary and local council elections last week and stated that next months it will set presidential dates.
