Erias Lukwago has appointed Doreen Nyanjura as the new Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor to replace Sarah Kanyike.
Erias Lukwago, the Kampala Lord Mayor has appointed Doreen Nyanjura as the new Deputy Lord Mayor.
The post fell vacant yesterday after Lukwago’s deputy, Sarah Kanyike, refused to reject the presidential nomination.
Sarah Kanyike was appointed by President Museveni last week to serve as the Director of Gender Community Services, and Production for Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
After her appointment, Kanyike signed a letter of resignation to her employer, Erias Lukwago, following a three-day ultimatum to reject the presidential nomination. Kanyike has served as the deputy of Lukwago since 2016 after the election.
Lukwago said there had been a lot of consultation before the appointment of Doreen Nyanjura and the announcement of the new Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor was made at City Hall on Thursday afternoon.
Lukwago adds that this race is made up of many qualified people, but they only want one person who can stand out.
“They were always going to be a standout, but the race had so many worthy people,” Lukwago said.
“I am honoured and delighted to announce today. Doreen Nyanjura has been appointed as the new Deputy Lord Mayor and I have requested the powers of the Lord Mayor’s Office under Sections 9 and 10 of the KCCA Act,” Lukwago added.
Doreen Nyanjura is the Woman Councilor at Makerere University and Minister of Finance and Administration at KCCA. Doreen Nyanjura was the flag bearer of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) at City Hall speakers last year, but she was defeated by People Power Movement candidate Abu Baker Kawalya.
After the defeat, she was appointed Finance Minister at KCCA.
In other changes, President replaced the current KCCA Executive Director Andrew Kitaka with Dorothy Kisaka, the Vice Head for the Delivery Unit at the Prime Minister’s office, who is responsible for quickly tracking the administration of government programmes.
Kisaka served as an administrator on the COVID-19 Response Fund Task Force. She was also the managing director of Executive Consults. Dorothy Kisaka once served as the legal affairs commissioner for the NRM Election Commission. When Dr Ruhakana Rukunda was still at the forefront.
Earlier this week, Peter Kaujju, a spokesman for the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), resigned from office after 9 years and is rumoured to be heading to UMEME.
