In 2005 she was awarded the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Motion picture and was the first actress to win the prize.
The veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Genevieve Nnaji commemorated a reflective New Year tweet in the film industry for two decades.
The Nollywood star joined the film industry as a young actor in the mainstream movie,’ Ripples,’ which controlled the airwaves in the eighties.
Genevieve, 39, made her directorial debut in over 100 films and several TV ads–including Lux, Pronto and Omo–with the film Lion heart, which has become a great success and a boost to the career of the actress cum filmmaker.
Early Life
At the age of 19, the star made her mainstream Nollywood debut on one of Nollywood ‘s classic films, ” Most Wanted,” with Regina Askia and Ayo Adesanya as well.
She starred in films including Mark of the Beast, Last Party, and Ijele before coming into play with her role in the 2002 film Sharon Stone.
In 2003, she was also the first actress to receive the Best Actress Award from the Nigerian Censors Board. In 2009, Oprah Winfrey referred to her as Julia Roberts of Africa.
Nnaji was one of Nollywood ‘s best paid actresses in 2009 and the first actress to receive the 2001 City Peoples Awards for Best Actress.
