This time around, female candidates outperformed their male counterparts in the just-released Uganda Certificate of Advanced Education (UACE) examinations of 2020 results, which is quite unusual.
KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA (https://lifestyleuganda.com/) — The results of the recently released Uganda Certificate of Advanced Education (UACE) 2020 examinations have shown that female candidates this time around have beat their male counterparts. This is quite unusual.
In the announcement of the results on Friday, Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Executive Secretary, Mr Daniel Odongo, commented that female candidates, though fewer, did better than the male candidates.
”The percentage of female candidates who pass the upper levels (3P and 2P) is higher, while the percentage of female candidates who pass the lower levels and the failure rate are lower than for male candidates,” Odongo said.
According to him, female candidates achieved higher marks in Arts, Mathematics, and Physics at the principle pass (A-E) level, while male candidates had better scores in Agriculture, Chemistry, Biology, Art, and General Paper.
Compared to 2019, Odongo also noted that there was a general improvement in performance.
He said an analysis of the overall performance of candidates in the examination showed that an extremely high number of candidates (99.2%) qualified for the UACE award, better than the 99.6% of 2019.
Despite this, no candidates were registered for UACE at Luzira Prison, as has been the norm in previous years. Candidates for UCE and PLE however, were registered.
In 2019, 104,476 candidates registered from 2,094 centres while only 98,392 candidates registered from 1,952 centres for the 2020 UACE examination, a decrease of 6,084.
In total, 97,084 candidates sat for exams, of which 41,190 were female, 26,602 passed with two passing principles, 19,015 with one passing principle, and 9,616 with one passing subsidiary.
There were 796 candidates who didn’t score a single point during the exams, whereas in 2019, there were 1,433 who failed completely.
On average, 99.2 per cent of students qualify for the award of the UACE certificate, but only 69.8 per cent, or 68,013 students, qualify to enter university after obtaining more than two principles passes as a standard educational requirement.
