The eagerly awaited second edition of the annual Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon is set to take place on Saturday, September 2, 2023, in the town of Kasese. This announcement was made during a press conference held at Rozaho in Kololo, following a 3km run/walk in the suburbs of Kololo.
A Global Invitation
During the press conference, the event organizers extended an invitation to runners, athletes, and travel enthusiasts from around the world to participate in this iconic event. Recently named the “world’s most beautiful half-marathon” by USA Today, the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon aims to showcase the splendor of Uganda’s natural wonders.
Improved Route and Spectacular Views
Amos Wekesa from Equator Hikes, the marathon’s organizers, revealed that this year’s route has been enhanced to provide runners with a breathtaking experience in the Kasese region.
The brand-new 42-kilometer route will offer participants captivating vistas of the Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Equator, two crater lakes, and the majestic Rwenzori Mountains. The half-marathon remains unchanged, allowing runners to continue to enjoy the scenic beauty of the course.
Options for Every Runner
The marathon caters to runners of all skill levels, offering three different categories: the 42km full marathon, the 21km half-marathon, and the 5km fun run. Each category presents a unique opportunity for individuals to challenge themselves while appreciating the awe-inspiring beauty of the Rwenzori Mountain ranges.
Promoting Sports Tourism and Community Development
The marathon seeks to promote sports tourism, encourage healthy lifestyles, and create a thriving business environment for the local community.
Emmy Hashakimana, the Marketing and Innovations director at Uganda Breweries Limited, expressed pride in associating the Tusker Lite brand with an event that shares their purpose. Hashakimana emphasized that Tusker Lite embraces a spirit of pushing boundaries and not limiting oneself, a spirit shared by marathon runners.
Registration and Early Bird Rates
Registration for the marathon is already open, and early bird rates are available until the end of June. East African Community residents can register for Shs50,000, while international runners can register for $50.
From July onwards, rates will be Shs60,000 for East African Community residents and $60 for international runners. Registration can be completed on the marathon’s website, www.mtrwenzori.com.

In the lead-up to the main event in September, Tusker Lite will organize a series of engaging activities and activations to prepare participants and generate excitement. With the marathon scheduled to close entries on August 1 or upon reaching capacity, Amos Wekesa affirmed the readiness of Kasese to host this year’s marathon. He also highlighted how the event has positively transformed the economic fortunes of the town.
