The Electoral Commission has decided on the date of the 2021 presidential elections in Uganda as 14 January 2021.

KEY POINTS

  • The Commission appointed 14 January 2021 as the date for the presidential elections.
  • According to the road map, these campaigns are expected to end 24 hours before the vote.

The Electoral Commission has selected a time limit for the conduct of candidates’ presidential elections campaign meetings, 2021, from 9 November 2020 to 12 January 2020 following the completion of the presidential nomination exercise.

The Electoral Commission also appointed 14 January 2021 as the date for Uganda presidential elections. The same date was announced earlier as the voting date for the MPs.

In this campaign period, the Electoral Commission urges all of the candidates nominated, its agents, supporters and the public to follow the guidelines set out by the Electoral Commission carefully.

The Commission also announced that campaigns will begin on 9 November 2020 for all the candidates nominated for parliamentary and local government elections.

According to a roadmap released by the EC boss, Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, these campaigns are expected to end 24 hours before the actual vote.

However, the candidates are permitted to hold campaign meetings in a regulated manner preferably outside the meeting with a limited attendance of up to 70 people to allow those attending the event to comply with the 2-meter social distance rule.

The Commission requires applicants and venue owners to ensure that the sites are equipped with wash facilities and sanitary facilities and that supports who attend the camp meetings always wear masks when they enter or leave the site.
