Nigeria’s global superstars Wizkid and Tems have been nominated in the ‘Top R&B Song’ category at the Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs).
KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA — Wizkid and Tems, two of Nigeria’s biggest global stars, have been nominated for the ‘Top R&B Song’ category in the 2022 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs).
The 2022 Billboard Music Awards will be held at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on 15 May to recognize outstanding achievements in music based on album sales, digital sales, streaming, radio airplay, tours, and engagement on social media, among other metrics.
The nomination for Wizkid and Tems for the 2022 Billboard Music Awards follows their recent loss at the Grammy Awards where they were nominated in the Best Global Music Performance category for the hit song “Essence”.
Nigerian singers will face competition from Doja Cat, Silk Sonic, Giveon and Justin Bieber in the ‘Top R&B Song’ category, and remember Wizkid and Tems remixed Essence with Justin Beiber.
This track is off of Wizkid’s ‘Made in Lagos’ album, which became the longest-charting album on the Billboard World Albums chart.
The Afrobeats track surpasses Cesaria Evora’s eponymous album which was the longest-charting album 27 years ago.
In 2016, Wizkid won the Top R&B Song, Top R&B Collaboration, and Top Streaming Song (Audio) awards at the Billboard Music Awards for his track ‘One Dance’ featuring Drake.
Currently, Ye (Kanye West), Drake, and Doja Cat each have double-digit nominations, with Doja being the top female artist with 14.
Globally, The Weeknd leads with 17 nominations at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, including Top Artist, Top Male Artist, and Top Hot 100 Artist, while Ye has 13 nominations, including a near clean sweep in Top Christian Song, and Top Gospel Song.
Ye (Kanye West), Drake, and Doja Cat all currently hold double-digit nominations, with Doja ranking first among female artists with 14.
Drake currently holds the record of having won 29 Billboard Music Awards, including being lauded as the Artist of the Decade at the 2021 awards ceremony.
Drake will compete alongside Justin Bieber, Lil Nas X, and his collaborator on “The Crew” for the honours of Top Artist, top male artist, top Billboard 200 artist, and top Hot 100 artist.
Latto is up for a first-time nomination in Top Rap Female Artist alongside Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, Juice WRLD, Moneybagg Yo, Lil Baby and Polo G are all nominated in Top Rap Artist.
Silk Sonic is nominated for Top Duo/Group, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Album, and Top R&B Song, while Giv*on is up for seven nominations, including Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Male Artist, and Top New Artist.
