The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) are being held on 12 September at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, and African music artists Wizkid and Shatta Wale have received nominations.
KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA — Nigerian singer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known professionally as Wizkid and Ghanaian reggae-dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, have all secured nominations ahead of the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on 12 September at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Wizkid features on ‘Brown Skin Girl’, and Shatta Wale on ‘Already’ on Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album and musical film Black Is King. Both artists contributed to the visual album.
At the 2021 MTV VMAs, ‘Brown Skin Girl’ received nominations in the Best R&B and Best Cinematography categories, while ‘Already’ received a nomination for Best Art Direction.
Wizkid’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ won the Grammy Award for Best Music Video this year and was awarded the NAACP Image Award for the second consecutive year.
During the 2019 Soul Train Music Awards, Ashford & Simpson presented the Songwriter’s Award to the song; one year later, the Music Video of the Year Award was presented to the song.
As a result of his nomination for ‘Already,’ Shatta Wale becomes the first Ghanaian artist to receive a nomination at the MTV VMAs.
Additionally, the song is also nominated for multiple Music Video Production Association Awards this year after winning Collaboration of the Year in 2020 at the BreakTudo Awards and Song of the Year at the African Entertainment Awards USA.
The top nominee this year is Justin Bieber with seven nominations, followed by Megan Thee Stallion with six.
In the Song of the Year category, Justin and Megan will compete against Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift.
