The 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards nominees have been announced ahead of the event on 26 February 2022, including Nigerian stars Wizkid, Tems, Fireboy DML, Tiwa Savage, and Omah Lay as well as Ghanaian KiDi.

KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA (https://lifestyleuganda.com/) — West African music stars like Wizkid, Tems, Fireboy DML, Tiwa Savage and Omah Lay as well as Ghana’s KiDi have been nominated for the 53rd National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Image Awards, which will take place on 26 February 2022.
Since 1967, the NAACP Image Awards have recognized outstanding achievements by people of color in film, television, music, and literature.
In the category of Best International Song, Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ featuring Tems, Fireboy DML’s Peru, and Tiwa Savage’s Brandy-assisted ‘Somebody’s Son’ all earned nods. Also nominated were Omah Lay’s ‘Understand’ and KiDi’s ‘Touch It’.
Nigerian power lady Tems was also nominated for ‘Outstanding New Artist’ along with Grammy-winning Nigerian-American singer Cynthia Erivo, the US singers Jimmie Allen and Saweetie, and German singer Zoe Wees.

This year, Wizkid is returning to the 2022 NAACP Image Awards following Beyoncé’s ‘Brown Skin Girl’ win last year for Outstanding Music Video/Visual Album.
The 52nd NAACP Image Awards also awarded the Outstanding Jazz Album Award to American singer, scholar, and activist Somi of Rwandan and Ugandan descent.
Tiwa Savage, who was shortlisted for her single ‘Temptation’ featuring English singer Sam Smith last year, is back in the NAACP’s ‘Outstanding International Song’ category this year.
In the global nominations for ‘Entertainer of the Year’, US stars Jennifer Hudson, Lil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion, Regina King and Tiffany Haddish lead the way. Netflix leads the nomination lists with 52 at this year’s NAACP.

There will be no live audience at the 53rd NAACP Image Awards due to concerns about COVID-19 omicron variants. The show will be hosted by black-ish actor Anthony Anderson.
