According to a joint statement released by The Recording Academy and CBS on Wednesday, the 64th Grammy Awards have been postponed due to an unusual spike in COVID-19 cases caused by a strain of the Omicron virus. The awards were scheduled to take place on January 31, 2022, but will now take place at a later date.

KAMPALA | LIFESTYLE UGANDA (https://lifestyleuganda.com/) — The 64th Grammy Awards have been postponed due to an increase in COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant; the ceremony was scheduled for January 31, 2022, but will take place at a later date instead, CBS and The Recording Academy said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

  • The Grammy Awards 2022 have been postponed due to the Omicron threat.
  • Last year, the awards ceremony was postponed for similar reasons.
  • The 64th Annual Grammy Awards will honor 86 categories of musical work.
  • Globally, jazz singer Jon Batiste leads this year’s Grammy nomination list with 11 nods.
  • Angélique Kidjo, Wizkid nominated for Grammy Awards 2022 for ‘Best Global Music Album’.

Putting the ceremony on is at risk of too many risks, according to a joint statement by the scheme’s oversight body, the Recording Academy, and US broadcaster CBS. The awards ceremony was postponed due to similar reasons last year.

“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual Grammy Awards show,” the statement reads.

According to a statement from CBS, “After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community, and many of our partners, the Recording Academy has postponed the 64th Annual Grammy Awards show.”

”We remain committed to the health and safety of the members of the music community, the audience and the many people who work tirelessly to put the show together. We will communicate a new date in due course.”

”Providing a safe and healthy environment for our music community, the audience, and the hundreds who work tirelessly on the production remains our top priority,” say the organisers, adding that a new date will be announced in due course.

The Grammy Awards, which celebrate artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence of the recording industry without regard to album sales or chart position, are widely regarded as music’s biggest night.

About 22 000 eligible entries were submitted between 1 September 2020 and 30 September 2021 for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, which will recognize musical achievement across 86 categories.

More than 11 000 members of the Recording Academy will vote for the 2022 Grammy Award winners.

African artists at the 2022 Grammy Awards

African stars including Ghana’s Rocky Dawuni and Benin’s Angélique Kidjo, as well as Nigeria’s Wizkid, Femi and Made Kuti have all been nominated at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

According to Rocky Dawuni, the internet’s role in democratizing music distribution and eliminating gatekeepers contributed to the continent’s recent success at the awards, which demonstrates that African music has “always been an important force.”

In Rocky Dawuni’s view, the internet’s role in democratizing music distribution and removing gatekeepers is likely responsible for the recent success of African music at the awards. Dawuni believes this proves that African music has “always had that power.”

The 64th Grammys will be the edition with the most nominations from Africa thanks to South Africa’s Wouter Kellerman and Black Coffee. Burna Boy won the Global Music Album award last year.

Across the globe, jazz singer Jon Batiste leads the Grammy nominations for this year with 11 nods, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best R&B Album.

Batiste is followed by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. with eight nominations each, and Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo are nominated for seven awards each.
