The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the 2021 Oscar Awards will be postponed from its usual February date.

This Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the 2021 Oscar Awards will be postponed from its usual February date. Instead, the 93rd annual awards ceremony will take place on April 25, 2021.
Coronavirus restrictions have pushed back many theatrical releases and halted most film production this year. The academy wants to be flexible and accommodate in light of production delays.
Report of the Academy
Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dan Hudson stated in their statement, “For over a century, films have played an important role in comforting, encouraging and entertaining us in the dark ages.
They certainly will this year. We hope that in extending the eligibility period and the date of our awards, filmmakers have the flexibility to complete and publish their films without being subject to any restrictions. “

This delay marks the fourth time in history that the Academy Awards have been postponed. In 1938, the Academy reimagined the festival after 100 people died in a Los Angeles flood.
Awards were again delayed after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The third postponement came after the attempted assassination of Hollywood veteran President Reagan.
New eligibility rules
To remedy the recent recession in the film industry, the Academy will now consider films released from January 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021.
For special categories, the cutoff for eligibility is the December 1, 2020 release date. “Special categories” refers to the animated film, animated short film, documentary feature, documentary film, international feature film and live-action shortlists.
The deadline for January 15, 2021, will be in the general admission categories, including Best Picture, Best Score and Best Original Song.
